The Origin

Movies in the Park and Community Outreach began from a desire to reach people with the Gospel who were unable or unwilling to attend a traditional church service.

In 2013, Lela became ill, and over time her health challenges limited her ability to regularly attend church and actively participate in ministry. Through this experience, we recognized that many people face barriers that prevent them from attending church services, whether due to health concerns, work schedules, family circumstances, or personal hesitation. We felt called to create a flexible ministry that could bring the message of Jesus Christ directly into the community rather than waiting for people to come through church doors.

After much prayer and discernment, we began exploring ways to share the Gospel in a welcoming environment. We carefully selected family-friendly movies that clearly communicate biblical truths, the message of salvation, and the hope found through Jesus Christ's death on the cross and resurrection on the third day.

When the COVID-19 pandemic began, it further reinforced the need for community-based outreach. During that time, we clarified our mission, formally organized the ministry, and registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. To continue serving safely during public gathering restrictions, we launched our events as drive-in movie experiences. Once restrictions were lifted, we transitioned back to traditional outdoor seating while continuing our commitment to community outreach.

As the ministry grew, Lela recognized another important need. Two years ago, she approached the board with a vision to ensure that every household attending our events would have access to God's Word. As a result, we established a free Bible ministry and began providing age-appropriate study Bibles to anyone in need. Since then, we have distributed more than 100 Bibles to children, teens, and adults seeking to grow in their faith.

What began as a single outreach event in Cordes Lakes, Arizona, has expanded into a multi-state ministry serving communities in both Arizona and Ohio. Today, Movies in the Park and Community Outreach hosts events in multiple park locations while remaining focused on the same mission that inspired its beginning: sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, serving communities with love, and providing opportunities for people to encounter God's truth in a welcoming and accessible setting.
